Vineyards are primarily situated on sites with moderate to low fertility with stony, sandy loam top soil overlaying deep layers of free-draining shingle. These shallow, fast draining, low fertility soils reduce vine vigour and help produce a lush, aromatic ripe wine. Where a more herbaceous style is desired, sites with greater retentive soils and moderate fertility are chosen.
